Process versus Product Innovation
This chapter provides a summary of the empirical evidence in relation to our research questions, conceptual framework and theoretical basis. Moreover, it draws conclusions about the relations between different kinds of innovations and the creation or destruction of jobs. Section 6.1 relates the concepts and categories first presented in Chapter 2 to the specific arguments that were developed to interpret the empirical evidence reviewed in Part II (Chapters 3, 4 and 5). This section is primarily concerned with demonstrating the relevance and usefulness of our analytical framework. However, the discussion has an empirical basis as well, which is indicated by brief references to the supporting evidence discussed under various hypotheses in Part II. The second section (6.2) is more concerned with the further development of ‘appreciative’ theorizing. Here, we consolidate and systematize some elements of our theoretical perspective on innovations and employment. This is done by linking together arguments that were developed in relation to specific concepts and particular hypotheses (or sets of hypotheses) in Part II. The result is a more general argument about the employment consequences of different kinds of innovations and their relation to different kinds of growth. Section 6.3 applies this argument to the empirical evidence reviewed in Part II. Three general propositions are presented and discussed in relation to relevant research findings.
