Epilogue: towards innovation and high performance in research on services Jean Gadrey and Faïz Gallouj We would like to conclude this collaborative volume by touching on some of the questions that seem to us crucial if further progress is to be made in economic and socio-economic research on services. Most of these questions have already been addressed by the various contributors to the book. Our aim in this epilogue is to give them greater visibility, to introduce a little order and to add a few hypotheses. Of course, it is our own view of the priorities for such a research agenda that we are putting forward here, a view that may not be shared by all those who have contributed to the book. This epilogue is, therefore, intended as a very open contribution that seeks to prefigure some of the academic debates to be pursued in future. We concentrate on three wide-ranging sets of ‘fundamental’ questions which, in our view, should be regarded as priorities: • the concepts, typologies and methodologies that might serve to bring some order to the diversity of services, particularly with a view of measuring and evaluating results and performance; • the role and social organization of knowledge and intelligence in the production, innovation, consumption and trading of services; • the role of ICTs in the development of services and the rationalization of the processes whereby they are produced, as well as in innovation in services.
