This book attempts to make sense of a new area of integrated study, namely information systems and information technology (IS/IT) and the organization. It also aims to bring this mix into the broader theme of complexity as applied to organization and management and to draw useful conclusions about how to organize and how to manage IS/IT in the knowledge era. The author argues in favour of a more action-oriented – as opposed to planning dominated – approach to information systems management.

A new view of the world is taking shape in the minds of advanced scientific thinkers the world over, and it offers the best hope of understanding and controlling the processes that affect the lives of us all. Let us not delay, then, in doing our best to come to a clear understanding of it. (Ervin Laszlo, 1996:viii) As conveyed at the outset, this book is the result of a series of intellectual challenges related to academic, managerial and consulting activities in the areas of business information, information technology, strategy, organizational development and change management, which have presented themselves to the author over the years. Throughout the book we have tried to build an argument in favour of a more action-oriented (as opposed to a planningdominated) approach to information systems management. We have started off by arguing that although there is a strong relationship between the growth of IS/IT in organizations and the emergence of the knowledge economy, it is not possible to establish clear cause-and-effect links between the two phenomena. The impact of information systems and technology in organizations is much more complex and widespread than some schools of thought seemed to believe in the early days of the information revolution. One of the outcomes of such an awareness has been the emergence of the information systems discipline, which has succeeded in highlighting the relevance of many strategic and organizational issues related to the organizational transformations brought about by IS/IT.
