11. Innovation networks in a crossborder context: the case of Vienna Michaela Trippl INTRODUCTION This chapter deals with the potentials and opportunities for the rise of new innovation networks between metropolitan cities and their neighbouring regions in a cross-border context. The specific empirical focus is on the city of Vienna and the cross-border region of Centrope, which is made up of the Eastern part of Austria and the adjacent regions in Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Vienna is not just Austria’s key location of science and the country’s core centre of knowledge-based development processes, it also constitutes the major innovation hot spot within the Centrope area. One of the principal motives for creating the cross-border region of Centrope in the year 2003 was to intensify trans-frontier cooperation and to facilitate the emergence of knowledge linkages between Vienna and the neighbouring areas at the other side of the Austrian borders. The key aim of this chapter is to analyse to what extent and in which ways Viennese companies are engaged in such cross-border networking and knowledgesharing activities with partners in Eastern Centrope, that is, in Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. From a conceptual viewpoint fuelled by recent insights of the ‘proximity school’ (see, for instance, Boschma, 2005; Torre, 2008) the level of innovation-driven networking and integration can be regarded as essentially influenced by various forms of distance prevailing in a cross-border area between its constituent parts.
