Chapter 12: Non-standard employment of women in service sector occupations: a comparison of European countries
Increasing female labour market participation is arguably one of the decisive factors in explaining the rising shares of non-standard employment in European countries. Recent job expansion among women has mainly been taking place in service sector employment which produced a short- or medium-run trade-off between the objective of increasing female labour market participation and favouring de-segregation (European Commission 2009). A similar and linked trade-off is evident with regard to the gender wage gap, with countries displaying comparatively low female employment rates having lower gender wage gaps than countries with high female employment rates (Blau and Kahn 2003).
