Chapter 8: Growth factors in Russian entrepreneurial firms
The problem of determining key factors of growth in entrepreneurial firms remains crucial to the subject of entrepreneurship. In European countries and the United States, much research has been devoted to this topic, often with ambiguous results. At the same time, similar research in Russia is nearly absent because of problematic access to primary sources of data on Russian firms. Functioning in Russia’s business environment is sufficiently challenging for doing business, and defining internal and external growth factors will help entrepreneurs not only to survive in the prevailing complex conditions, but also to operate more successfully and achieve success. The goal of this chapter is to discover key internal and external growth factors for Russian entrepreneurial firms. By “growth factors” we mean internal and external variables that have a positive or negative influence on a firm’s growth. As an indicator of a firm’s growth we use the rate of growth in sales volume, which is fairly widely used in the research and thus acts as a universal indicator (Delmar 1997).
