Inter-urban road freight transport is one of the most important economic sectors of the European Union. The wide influence of transport on almost all aspects of life has long been generally known, but road transport plays a special role for the European Union (EU) economy since this transport mode fulfils the overwhelming majority of transport needs both for companies and individuals. From the macroeconomic and mezzo-economic perspective this impact is also crucial and can be perceived as a general effect for the economic growth, structural changes of the economy, regional development and cohesion, and so on. Interrelations between macroeconomic development and road transport condition influence the EU economic and industrial competitiveness. In this chapter inter-urban road freight is perceived from the perspective of reforming regulatory frameworks and their effects. This regulatory reform should result in improving operational conditions or freeing it from unnecessary limitations needed in order to complete the creation of a Single European Transport Area including a competitive, efficient and fair road freight market.
