Handbook of Research on the Learning Organization

Adaptation and Context

Elgar original reference

Edited by Anders Örtenblad

This timely Handbook establishes the ‘contextualization’ of the learning organization idea as a research field. In contrast to much of the previous literature, which has approached the learning organization as a panacea that every organization could and should adopt, this major new Handbook puts the learning organization into context. It examines the relevance of the learning organization idea to organizations in various specific contexts, employing examples from a wide variety of cultures including China and Islamic nations, and from industries as diverse as the police force, care services for the elderly and family firms.

Chapter 4: Contextualizing the learning organization: approaches to research design

Anders Örtenblad

Subjects: business and management, knowledge management, organisation studies, innovation and technology, knowledge management

As in Chapter 3, this chapter is based on a review of literature that, more or less explicitly, has taken up the relevance of the learning organization idea to organizations in various certain contexts. The focus of this chapter is on how previous works have approached and studied the relevance of the learning organization idea in particular contexts or to organizations that are within these contexts. Research methodology is not only about paradigms and the collection and analysis of ‘data’. The research design is also important. Research design involves the kind of question that is being asked; what is compared to what in order to reach an answer to the question; and definitions of theoretical concepts used.
