Since Eby et al. (2005) noted the lack of research on coping and support, there has been increasing movement in the literature to understand how individuals seek to manage the boundaries between their work and personal lives. This chapter discusses methods that individuals employ to effectively integrate work and personal life domains. We conceptualize individual s trategies for managing work–life as any action that people can take in order to reduce conflict, enhance facilitation or maintain balance between their work and non-work domains. Specifically, the focus is upon tactics that individuals can implement themselves as opposed to ones that organizations employ to manage work and life roles. By focusing on individual strategies, we are targeting things that individuals may have direct control over rather than things for which they must rely upon others. In the sections that follow, we: (1) characterize the literature to date concerning individual strategies for managing work–life; (2) discuss constructs and research findings regarding individual strategies for navigating the work–life interface; and (3) propose future directions for research.
