Teaching a class on work–life policies to my international MBA students has always been interesting because the debate about the best company policies that help employees manage their work–life interface always generates a lively discussion. For example, some students support the implementation of policies such as telecommuting as a way to improve work–life balance, while others hold that telecommuting would not be effective in their countries. These students suggest several potential country-specific problems with telecommuting policies. They argue that supervisors might lose a degree of control over their employees, employees might feel isolated or lack favorable environments to work at home, and it might be difficult for human resources (HR) directors to oversee a company’s compliance with workplace safety and health regulations.
