This chapter provides a brief overview of the first Slovak foresight exercise carried out in the years 2003 and 2004 as one of the country case studies compared in the framework of this book. Since the authors of this publication had identified three main phases of the interactions among researchers, decision-makers and the public as Dialogue, Vision and Dissemination, these three aspects became the basic points for this analysis. Compared with other foresight cases described in this publication, for example the Hungarian educational foresight project and the Danish case study, the Slovak case is not only oriented towards simply one selected aspect of socio-economic development. However, some similarities from this point of view may be apparent when comparing the Slovak foresight exercise with the German Futur case. There were several reasons for undertaking the Slovak foresight exercise. The most important was the identification of broad socio-economical challenges in the Slovak Republic under conditions of sustainable development and globalisation with a long-term perspective up to 2015. It was considered that the identified thematic and systemic priorities for research and development should support the Slovak government in formulating science and technology priorities for elaborating the future policy strategy.
