‘Youthworx Media’ is a Melbourne-based youth project that capitalizes on the popularity of media production and training to support marginalized young people in re-entering education and employment markets. The delivery of accredited courses in Creative Industries (Certificates I to IV), through partnership with North Melbourne Institute of TAFE (NMIT) and Swinburne University, is the key facet of Youthworx’s media training, alongside open access multimedia workshops and independent one-on-one mentoring. At Youthworx young people produce a variety of media content, such as digital storytelling, radio programs, short documentaries and fiction films. The processes of Cultural Production are organized as attractive but also purposeful, with built-in research activities, brainstorming, planning, teamwork and collegial feedback. Creative content is distributed through the youth community radio SYN MEDIA (Youthworx’s partner), public screening events throughout the city, the program’s website, and to external clients who commission work through Youthworx’s social enterprise. This deliberately set up semiformal context for digital media production is an example of an alternative education model directed towards developing general skills in order to facilitate youth transitions into further education and the labour market. Employment in the creative media sector is not the main objective of the project, although some Youthworx participants may go on to creative employment.
