Chapter 22: Social media surveillance
This chapter gives an overview of aspects that are relevant for studying online surveillance and privacy. First, the notions of privacy and surveillance are introduced. Next, what social media is all about, and what social media surveillance is, are clarified. Three dimensions of online surveillance and privacy are distinguished: the economic, the political, and the cultural, everyday life dimension. Finally, a critical disciplinary reflection about studying online privacy and surveillance is provided.
