When we arrived in St. Pauli, Hamburg - supposedly the liveliest part of town - there was nothing but peace and quiet. We had just got off the train from Berlin and found ourselves in a sunny, relaxed idyll a stone's throw from Millerntor Stadium, home venue of the 'cult-club' FC St. Pauli (talkin' football here). Both district and club are widely known for their special sense of life - pointedly offbeat, open-minded and left-hearted, a shimmering fusion of fighting the bad and partying for good. However, at 10 a.m. on a weekday this sense of life is hard to discover. Why, then, were we there so early? We were meeting with an offspring of that sense of life, an initiative with the image of a flag-waving fun guerrilla, dedicated to fighting world thirst. Viva con Agua de Sankt Pauli is a multi-faceted non-profit organization that aims at improving access to water and sanitation wherever this is severely limited or non-existent. Their motto 'Water for all and all for water' borrows from Dumas's musketeers and captures well the mission and spirit: access to clean water and sanitation shall be granted to everyone and everyone shall engage in this mission. Viva con Agua (VcA) mainly acts as a donation broker and income generator to realize water for all.
