Legal integration is one of the essential drivers for achieving the political objectives of the European Union (EU). This chapter provides a critical analysis of the processes of European legal integration. After introducing the instruments and processes of law-making in the EU, the chapter explains the role that the Court of Justice of the EU (CJEU) in the enforcement and integration of EU law. It then examines the harmonization of private law, in particular consumer legislation, to illustrate the achievements and prospects of European legal integration. This case study will also examine the difficulties of legal integration, in particular the need to recognize and negotiate the diversity in national laws, languages and legal cultures between Member States.
