Table 9.1 Comparative analysis of five different cultures   Americans Arabs Americans — (as) work­  oriented (as) patronizing (as) direct (as) profit­centred Arabs (as) ritualistic — Chinese (as) controlling (as) callous — (as) power­centred (as) secretive Japanese (as) formal (as) consentient (as) participative — (as) sexist Scandinavians (as) careful (as) egalitarian (as) environmental (as) matter­of­fact — Chinese Japanese Scandinavians (as) religious (as) pushy (as) rhetorical It is important to understand that this table is to be interpreted as a typified picture. For example: • the Chinese (as a type) look at the Japanese (as a type) as (too) participative; • Americans (as a type) look at the Arabs as (too) ritualistic, the Chinese as (too) controlling, the Japanese as (too) formal, and the Scandinavians as (too) careful (all  as types); or    Page 219 • Americans look at the Chinese (as a type) as (too) controlling, the Arabs look at them as (too) callous, the Japanese look at them as (too) power­centred, and the  Scandinavians look at them as (too) secretive (all as types).
