Chapter 3: Culture of Software Entrepreneurship
_____________________________________________________________ Chapter 1 explored entrepreneurial culture through its constituent parts and defined the concept as a business culture where individuals are inclined to participate in entrepreneurial decision-making through the creation of new firms; it also reviewed the existing literature and discussed some of the values linked to entrepreneurial culture across nations. Chapter 2 looked at the institutional context associated with the software industry in global cities such as Beijing and Dublin, and touched on achievement and materialism – the intrinsic values of cities – that have been linked to the rise of the software industry. This chapter will proceed to discuss the Chinese and Irish entrepreneurial culture, which is critical for the emergence of successful software firms. In their attempts to explain the clustering of innovative industries in particular locations, some recent studies have considered the importance of entrepreneurial culture associated with specific city industrial clusters (e.g. Saxenian 1994; Collinson 2000; Walcott 2002). Walcott (ibid.), in particular, discussed entrepreneurial culture in relation to the bioscience cluster in San Diego, California in terms of ‘a local culture supportive of experimentation, failure, and recovery’. This, therefore, highlights the regional dynamics that support the participation of individuals in entrepreneurial decision-making during their endeavour to create new firms, and provides another level of understanding of entrepreneurial culture that adds to the supra level, macro level, meso level and micro level analysis of entrepreneurial culture introduced in Chapter 1.
