Learning: n.1. Knowledge acquired by systematic study in any field or fields of scholarly application. 2. the act or process of acquiring knowledge or skill. (Macquarie Library 1981) Learning is a complex process that has many facets to it depending on context, situation and purpose. The purpose of learning from a safety demonstration in a workplace is about saving life and limb. The purpose of learning in a university setting is about acquisition and enhancement of knowledge. In the context of a global multicultural classroom it becomes even more complex to recognise the cultural factors that affect the learnings of different people from different nations. Is learning what we, the educators deem to be appropriate to pass on to the student, or is learning what the student deems to be appropriate and absorbs from the educator? This simple question is exacerbated once we take it into the higher education context of adult learning and of multicultural classrooms. Adult learning has quite different parameters to learning during early childhood or middle childhood and requires an understanding of the adult within the context of the world in which that adult lives and works. As a business educator facing a global, multicultural classroom, the complexity of adult learning takes on a whole new meaning as the student body represents multifaceted backgrounds of learning that may clash significantly within the classroom.
