Edited by Hans Landström, Hans Crijns, Eddy Laveren and David Smallbone

This book provides an invaluable, state-of-the-art overview of current European research in the field of entrepreneurship. It focuses on four themes, each of which illustrates a key dimension in the overall theme: • entrepreneurs and their role in entrepreneurship • entrepreneurship in family businesses • performance of new ventures and • entrepreneurial processes.

With this book, the European Council for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (ECSB) presents the third volume in a series of papers from the annual Research in Entrepreneurship and Small Business Conference (RENT). RENT XX, held in Brussels in November 2006, celebrated the anniversary of an event that started as a small workshop in Brussels 20 years ago. Today RENT has grown to become one of Europe’s best known and globally recognized conferences in the entrepreneurship field. RENT is organized jointly by the European Institute for Advanced Studies in Management (EIASM) and the ECSB. This book assembles selected best papers, discussing facets of the overall topic of RENT XX, namely ‘Entrepreneurship: a driver for sustainable growth in a global and knowledge-based environment’. I thank the editors and reviewers who assisted in selecting papers for their great effort. With this book and series, ECSB continues to offer a look into current European entrepreneurship research, thus facilitating knowledge transfer and international discussions.
