Chapter 12: The Value of Direct Call Services by Container Shipping Lines in Northern Europe: Support Model for Strategic Scenario Development and Case Study
Arne Jensen and Rickard Bergqvist 12.1 The problem A common problem in the design of liner service systems for intercontinental container flows between ports is to determine which ports to service with direct calls by large vessels and which ports to service by feeder vessels from transhipment ports. Generally, some ports in the system are used for both direct calls and transhipment of containers to and from other system ports by small feeder vessels, whereas the remaining ports only have direct calls for moving containers to and from their hinterlands. Transhipment ports normally have hinterlands. In this chapter, we focus on a well-defined container flow in both directions between a focal port in Northern Europe and a set of ports in a transcontinental region, for example in North East Asia. We develop a support model for strategic scenario description that can be used in a flexible way as a core component when analysing the economic threats and opportunities for various actors along the transport chain arising from moving the container flow by large deep-sea vessels with direct calls to the focal port instead of moving it by feeder vessels between the focal port and a transhipment port in continental Europe. As far as we know, this research problem has not been treated in the literature before within a conceptual generic framework.
