This book has grown out of an international conference on ‘Migration in Europe: threat or Benefit’, held in Vienna on 28–29 September 2007. It was the fifth conference of the Network ‘Strategic Elites and EU Enlargement’, sponsored by the British Council and organized by David Lane. The call for papers resulted in 80 proposals of which 22 were presented at the conference. The conference, locally organized by Max Haller, Professor of Sociology at the University of Graz, took place in the ‘Theatersaal’ of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna. In addition to the paper givers, it was also attended by many interested persons from Austria. After the conference the organizers decided to publish a sample of the papers. They invited Heinz Fassmann, Professor of Geography at the University of Vienna and Head of the Commission for Migration and Integration Research in the Austrian Academy of Sciences to be one of the editors. After a critical reflection in the present volume, 13 papers have been included with one additional paper by James Hampshire. We would like to thank all those who have contributed in financial terms to the conference: the British Academy, the Commission for Migration and Integration Research of the Austrian Academy of Science, the Austrian Chamber of Labour and the Austrian Economic Chamber.
