Corporate social responsibility (CSR) in emerging countries is often understood to be led primarily by the large multinational companies (MNCs) as well as being influenced by executives and CSR champions in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), who are personally motivated to pursue philanthropic and ethical approaches to business. In this chapter, we examine the situation in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), where a number of CSR initiatives are being implemented by private sector MNCs and SMEs, but also are being developed by the public and not-for-profit sectors. CSR in the UAE is highly influenced by some foreign MNCs that are known to be proactive in host countries as well as in their home countries and regions. However, the range of influential stakeholders in CSR in the UAE is much broader than the common stereotype of foreign MNCs being a principal driving force instilling the latest policies and practices in developing countries. The initiators of CSR activities in the UAE also include a range of local organizational actors and institutions. CSR advocates are based in a broad range of sectors and types of organization, and include: the headquarters of local multinational MNCs, government policy makers, CSR champions and teams, religious organizations, charities, not-for-profit organizations, NGOs and private sector consultancies.
