Prof. Frank Vanclay is Professor of Cultural Geography in the Faculty of Spatial Sciences at the University of Groningen, The Netherlands. His interests are in social impact assessment; social understandings of place; and the social understandings of natural resource management, farming and agriculture. With a Bachelor degree in environmental studies and a Masters in social research methods from Australian universities, he received his PhD in rural and environmental sociology from Wageningen University (The Netherlands). Frank is a former president of the International Rural Sociology Association and a former member of the Board of Directors of the International Association for Impact Assessment. He led the process of developing the International Principles for Social Impact Assessment and has written numerous publications on SIA, including co-editing The International Handbook of Social Impact Assessment (Edward Elgar, 2003). Dr Ana Maria Esteves is Director of the consulting firm, Community Insights Pty Ltd, which is based in Melbourne, Australia and Groningen, The Netherlands. She has affiliations with the Centre for Social Responsibility in Mining at the University of Queensland, and the Faculty of Economics and Commerce, University of Melbourne. Born in Mozambique, Ana Maria has lived in many countries. With an economics degree from South Africa, she has an MBA from the Melbourne Business School and a PhD from the University of Melbourne. As a consultant, Ana Maria goes beyond assessment to working with clients, predominantly in the mining, oil and gas sector, to contribute to social development at the local level.
