This chapter considers and reflects upon the evolution of the Chinese carbon market, from China’s ratification of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to the emergence of municipal and regional pilot emissions trading schemes today. It identifies and comments upon some of the developments over this period, and speculates on the potential future of carbon trading in China.
