Chapter 6: Collaborative Entrepreneurship and Internationalization in Life Sciences: Global Growth through Collaboration in Italian Biotech Firms
Antonella Zucchella and Diala Kabbara INTRODUCTION Collaborative entrepreneurship is an emerging pattern of entrepreneurial behaviour (Miles, Miles & Snow, 2006), which addresses the need for effective and continuous innovation through better utilization of knowledge by means of interfirm networking. In this chapter this perspective is used to explore collaborative entrepreneurship and the role it plays in the internationalization of biotech firms. The literature on the composition of entrepreneurial teams, social networks and the experience of entrepreneurs and the interorganizational networks between firms, all suggests that entrepreneurship can no longer be considered an individual act, a sort of solitary heroic behaviour in founding and making a new business grow. Collaborative entrepreneurship builds on these issues and posits that entrepreneurship and innovation are traits which should be evident in an organization over time – not just at inception – and that collaborative entrepreneurship is grounded in interfirm collaborations. In biotechnology the pressure to generate innovations and the attitude towards networking are among the key features of the industry (Hagedoorn, 1993; Lim, Garnsey & Gregory, 2006; Powell, Koput & Smith-Doerr, 1996; Owen-Smith and Powell, 2001; Stuart, Ozdemir & Ding, 2007). Social and interorganizational networks are intertwined in the internationalization processes of entrepreneurial ventures and the importance of this issue has been underlined by calls to draw upon network theory in international entrepreneurship (Oviatt and McDougall, 1994; Bell, 1995; Coviello and Munro, 1995, 1997).
