Where the critique of the copyright system is reinforced by noting that copyright expansion and commodification of information may restrict freedom and diversity of speech, insofar as they encourage the centralization of information production and the homogenization of cultural outputs. Corporate-driven culture and the market have a tendency to shape users’ tastes, channel users’ demands, and over-produce low-quality intellectual products. The effects of this system on cultural diversity can be stark. Several case studies show that copyright law allows mainstream information producers to repackage – and secure copyright protection for – minority culture, often appropriated in a disparaging fashion. The present system empowers the distributors to filter the discourse between authors and public while discouraging the reuse of creative expressions.
