Chapter 5: New frontiers in publishing: understanding open access journals
Restricted access

This chapter examines the benefits and challenges publishing in open access (OA) journals. In particular, this chapter contrasts open access (OA) journal publishing with the more conventional subscription-based model to achieve a better understanding of the ways in which the two models work. Next, the chapter turns to an explanation of the different types of OA publishing - such as Gold OA and Green OA - before focusing its attention on predatory journals. The latter sometimes masquerade as OA journals and it is important to understand - and be able to spot - the difference. We close the chapter with a discussion of the costs and benefits of OA publishing for authors.
