Chapter 12: Coordinating Diversities for Prospering DiverCities
Dafne C. Reymen 12.1 SOCIO-CULTURAL CONTEXT As announced in the introduction, this book has taken the challenge on board to identify and concretise the conditions for city policy to make the city inclusive and socially and economically sustainable in the longer term. We were able to identify a few general principles for policies to govern cultural diversity in a dynamic way that values diversity by inducing interrelatedness between culturally diverse groups. The first two chapters began from a theoretical perspective to identify the necessary conditions for the mechanisms through which cultural diversity stimulates creativity rather than leading to conflict. The third chapter describes the evolution and typologies of the diversity phenomenon in Europe over the last two decades. The following chapters contain empirical studies of the way diversity plays out in several cities. These cases have allowed us to test the conditions on particular real life examples not only to concretise the conditions but also to deduce some general principles from them and to consider the feasibility of these principles in daily policy practice. The principles and conditions that should underlie policies that recognise and value differences, because they induce socially and economically sustainable cities in the longer term, have to be appropriate in the light of the global contemporary society. The globalisation process is an important societal evolution that has impacted the ideas on cultural and ethnic identity as shown in Chapters 1 and 2.
