This chapter presents the main themes and research focus of the book, and provides a long-term overview of European Union energy and climate policy. It introduces the question of EU external energy dependence, how it has been affected by recent market and geopolitical developments, and Russia’s role in this context. The key aspects of the EU’s climate and energy frameworks and of the energy transition - such as renewable energy production and storage, the geopolitics of critical minerals and supply chains - are introduced too. Finally, the chapter provides an overview of the topics and arguments made in the following sections of the book.
