Chapter 5: Evolving purpose-driven alliances
Restricted access

In the lifecycle of alliances, the evolution stage is the ending of the alliance or a new beginning. In this stage in the lifecycle of an alliance members foresee that the future is uncertain and ambiguous, understand the dynamics in the collaboration and discover strategic issues. To cope with future challenges the alliance needs to become viable and adaptive while keeping an identity based on its essence and shared values. It is a balancing act between transformation and stability. As it evolves the alliance faces the task of continuing to renew itself as the context changes. In time, the perception of the importance of the alliance or the network may diminish, as well as the will to continue investing energy in it. Innovation seems necessary, but costs money and disrupts ongoing activities; caution in collaboration is now essential. The central question is how well the alliance is capable of innovating and reinventing itself and how the collaboration can be maintained and at the same time renewed.
