The Where framework: the creative bench formation
Restricted access

In addition to these forms for organizing, The Where also looks at ways of thinking differently about your creative process and creative business models. The six cases or recipes introduced in this chapter are • Toyota - an M-form organisation which shows that large, tightly structured organisations can still be creative if they have the capabilities to sense and seize upon new ideas from both inside and outside the organisation • Walt Disney - an X form organisation which relies on dynamic talented teams, provides them with a clear sense of vision / purpose, and trusts them to solve the problem without micro-managing them • Steve Jobs and the Tiger King - two different 'creative entrepreneurs' who illustrate both the strengths and weaknesses of the Star-form organisation - small entrepreneurial set-ups dominated by the personality of their founder • Factory Records - Tony Wilson's pioneering hybrid record label, club and artist management company is an example of the O-form organisation, where the energy comes from a tight knit circle of collaborators who share the same philosophy, rooted in a strong sense of place (or terroir) • The Skunk Works at Lockheed - a hybrid form where an autonomous unit develops its own creative processes at a distance from the main organization • Rivigo - a start-up that made the job of India's truck drivers more adaptable, more humane, promoting social as well and economic goods.
