Restricted access

This chapter connects the salient findings of Chapters 2 through 6 to amplify our underlying argument that changes in supply chain operations have been shaped by evolving patterns of consumption socialized by technological advancements. We argue that as human activities transcend from the physical to the virtual world under the digital connectivity of Industry 4.0, supply chain operations will be configured by social consumption. This chapter's synthesis is that while technology is providing businesses with the impetus to redefine and re-synchronize their supply chain operations, technology is also constantly being reshaped by consumers through a continuous process of social interactions. Supply chain operators wanting to harness the prowess of technology need to appreciate and draw wisdom from the social shaping of technology. This book has argued that the dynamism of supply chain operations sits at the heart of three interacting elements: technological advancements, business process changes and consumer purchase journeys.
