Chapter 7: Organizational improvisation: implications for academic research and long-term theory development

This chapter discusses the implications for research, pointing to future lines of formal theory development about organizational improvisation. The chapter examines some of the challenges facing researchers in this area, as well as the potential for crossover with other research areas. It is intended as a potential catalyst for organizational improvisation researchers, reminding us of potential avenues and areas of research where our knowledge is still limited. The chapter focuses on implications for academic research and long-term theory development. Priorities highlighted in the chapter include working to deepen understanding of specific phases of action during organizational improvisation; deepening understanding of distinct types of improvisation; and expanding and improving the methodological range and quality of research strategies.
