Crowdfunding is a key method of finance for entrepreneurs. Recent advances in the crowdfunding literature highlight differences both in the way gender and innovation strategy are perceived. However, many details about these relationships remain unexplored. In this chapter, we build on previous studies on gender and innovation and propose that female project creators utilizing an open innovation strategy for their projects will have superior outcomes. To support our propositions, we use a matching methodology across a large set of projects found on the rewards-based crowdfunding platform Kickstarter.com. We conclude by offering future avenues of research to fill important knowledge gaps concerning the intersection of gender and innovation strategy in crowdfunding more generally.
