This opening chapter lays the groundwork for what is to follow. It outlines the ravages that the COVID-19 pandemic wrought on the HE (and FE) sectors in the UK and gives some of the key responses. We take particular note of the effects on students and teachers, and look briefly at some of the ways they reacted. This chapter demonstrates how the book seeks to both capture the stories of these changes across the Higher Education sector and beyond in the UK and to serve as a horizon-scanning document for how we see education adapting and changing. We discuss education's liminal space - how we are no longer in the old but not yet fully adapted to the new - and discuss the dangers, the uncertainties and the possibilities as we move into a new educational landscape.
