Chapter 7: Teacher leadership
Restricted access

This chapter offers a critical review of both the concept of teacher leadership and its practical manifestation in schools around the world. It locates the analysis of teacher leadership within a wider discussion about leadership as a practice and the educational contexts in which it is practised. The concepts of distributed leadership and transformational leadership are highlighted and discussed because they are particularly germane to an exploration of teacher leadership. At the core of the chapter is the distinction between a practice based on formal positions within an organisation and that known as ‘non-positional teacher leadership’ offered by the author as an alternative. This leads to a discussion of strategies to facilitate teachers’ exercise of leadership.
