Chapter 15: Leadership development for social justice
Restricted access

The issue of social justice and education has become an international concern, which includes a focus on the exercise of social justice leadership. This form of leadership encompasses an expectation on those in school leadership roles, raising questions about the professional development of school leaders. While there is an expanding literature on social justice leadership, to date, less attention has been paid to the professional learning necessary to underpin the exercise of social justice leadership in schools. This chapter begins by examining two issues, social justice in education and the construction of social justice in policy. An overview of the field of leadership development and social justice is then followed by a discussion of four issues: the purpose of leadership development for social justice, the design of leadership development, capabilities for social justice leadership, and leadership development as a social justice strategy. The chapter concludes by highlighting issues for research and for the provision of leadership development for social justice leadership.
