Chapter 4: Applying sustainability within the curriculum
Restricted access

This chapter focuses on the teaching and learning approaches that integrate and embed sustainability principles in two specific second year modules within the Aston University BSc Marketing programme. The 'Events Marketing' module focuses on applied practice, whilst the 'Ethical and Sustainable Marketing' module engages students into critical thinking. In examining the rationale for the inclusion of sustainability along with particular pedagogical approaches, we highlight relationships to specific contexts with module leaders able to significantly impact module content within the parameters of the programme specifications. The two latter marketing modules showcase the centring of sustainability within real world business environments along with practises featuring ethics, sustainability, CSR, sustainable development, and sustainability management. Overall, our approaches highlight how lecturers, aided by their own tacit knowledge and commitment to integrating industry facing contexts, can enhance student awareness of the importance of current and future sustainability.
