Inheritance law is a family-oriented legal institution shaping how families can transfer wealth and properties across generations. In this entry, I discuss how the main elements of inheritance laws —the tax rate and testamentary freedom— impact business families’ goals. Finally, I describe common mitigation strategies and review the evidence on the consequences of inheritance laws for business families, investment, corporate governance, and social inequality.
