This research aims to provide a systematic overview of communication scholarship in the metaverse from 1965 to 2022. Using topic modeling and semantic network analysis, we compile 262 documents from the Web of Science and Google Scholar published in the field of communication, media, and journalism. We first investigate the theories most salient in the existing literature. Second, we identify three key thematic areas of research using a mixed-methods approach. Findings reveal five main theories emerging from this field. The results of the mixed-method approach show three major categories of topics, including user perceptions and experiences, technological challenges, development, and applications, as well as metaverse as media and culture. Limitations of this study and future directions are summarized.
