Chapter 17: Reframing school engagement: relationships to school among youth organizing participants working for educational justice

When young people engage in organizing for educational justice, how does their own relationship to school change? Through youth organizing, BIPOC young people and other young people marginalized by systemic inequality experience rich developmental contexts that affirm their identities and agency and provide opportunities for authentic leadership and critical action. Participation in youth organizing has been linked to stronger social-emotional skills, critical consciousness, and stronger school engagement and achievement. This chapter draws on qualitative data from a longitudinal mixed-method study of youth organizing participants enrolled in high school to examine how their experiences organizing to challenge educational policies and practices inform their engagement in their schools.
