To better understand B≈H behaviors, it is necessary to examine the underlying causes. This chapter examines factors that have been shown to be the basic sources or root causes of B≈H in organizations. Those factors have been identified as stemming from the individual (characteristics, dispositions), from the organization (culture, environments), and from aspects of power (imbalances, inequities). Following a discussion of those factors, a unique method (V-REEL®) for examining how those causes apply to your organization is presented. V-REEL®, while originally proposed to assist in strategic decision making, provides an excellent and somewhat unusual way of identifying how B≈H might be reduced or even eradicated in your organization.
