Sustainable finance has become a major phenomenon in emerging research and business practices, given significant global challenges of climate change, poverty, and inequality and food insecurity, among other complexities. This chapter discusses the origin, development, core principles and categories of sustainable finance. We uncover the history of sustainable finance and challenges of integrating sustainability into finance. The chapter also identifies the principles of sustainable finance, including comprehensiveness, connectivity, equity and prudence. Categories of sustainable finance have also been identified to include green finance, socially responsible investing, social business, social finance, climate finance and environmental finance. Finally, we discuss sustainable finance initiatives in Africa with case studies to elaborate the continent’s progress so far with sustainable financing in Africa.
