Anthropologists have studied a wide range of markets throughout the world, including rural peasant markets on the periphery of world capitalism, urban street traders in the informal economy, global commodity markets and financial markets at the heart of capitalism. A key feature of the anthropological study of markets is a focus on the concrete components of markets (the things transacted, the people transacting, the social relations among market participants and the types of exchanges) as well as the perspectives of the people who act in markets and are affected by them. This range and focus provide the concrete ethnography that gives economic anthropology a critical perspective on Western economic theories of markets and Western economic ideology more generally.
