The anthropological analysis of austerity has focused on the genesis, history and contemporary manifestation of this set of policies, with particular attention to its effects on society. Key themes in the anthropological literature include the relationship between austerity and neoliberal capitalism, analyses of the shifting role of the welfare state, the impact of austerity on health and health systems, migration and flows of refugees, the dynamics of precaritisation and recuperation, the rise of solidarity actions and social movements, and shifting experiences and conceptualisations of time. The anthropology of austerity is diverse, encompassing a growing number of national case studies, transnational analyses and historical investigations. This literature is briefly reviewed here, with an emphasis on the thematic areas outlined above.
