Chapter 12: The academic firm within a Cyber-D4 environment
Restricted access

The “Academic Firm” represents a new type of firm, designed to operate knowledge-focused and innovation-driven, and this within Cyber-D4 environments. Simultaneously, also the theoretical implications of the Quadruple and Quintuple Helix innovation systems appear to be valid for the academic firm. The academic firm regards itself to contribute decisively to the evolution of knowledge and innovation, and is sensitive and supportive for the promotion of knowledge society, knowledge economy and knowledge democracy. The academic firm has the potential of radically transforming and changing the way how knowledge-based and knowledge-oriented economic work is being organized and performed, by this unlocking the creative potential of humanity. The conceptual framework of Cyber-D4 (“Cyber-Defense, Cyber-Development, Cyber-Democracy, and Cyber-Diplomacy”) indicates further, what the environments are, in which the academic firms are operating and performing. It is evident that also the future of labor and education are changing. Therefore, the academic firm appears to offer a crucial working-environment attractiveness for employees (“knowledge workers”), which represents a factor, which will gain in importance in the future. Here a fruitful helical interaction is to emerge between economy, society and democracy.
