Attendance at football stadiums in Spanish First Division could be considered almost constant for the past two decades. As can be observed in Table 9.1, overall attendance in the First Division is about 8 to 9 million spectators each season. The increment in the 1995–96 season is the consequence of 22 teams instead of 20 in Spanish First Division football. In the Second Division, from the 1997/98 season there are 22 teams. The main categories of spectators are both season ticket holders who buy their seat at the beginning of the season, and occasional spectators who get their ticket for a single match. The other spectators are people invited by the club for institutional reasons; the latter do not pay to go into the stadium. Season ticket holders are about 75 percent of total spectators. The participation of three categories of spectators and their evolution in the last data set of this study (1995–96 season) and the last season (2011–12) for the First Division is shown in Table 9.2.
