Chapter 20: Making a difference in the classroom: developing global leadership competencies in business school students

In order to address the question, “Can global leadership competencies be developed?” we review extant global leadership competency models along with the competencies embedded in the models to delineate the domain of competencies necessary for global leadership effectiveness. Next we review the literature on global leadership development and then propose cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) as a fruitful methodology to enhance global leadership competencies in business school students. A clinical case study is reported that illustrates the potential value of utilizing CBT methods in the classroom. The chapter concludes with a discussion of how CBT principles can make a difference in for-profit, not-for-profit and governmental contexts for the development of global leadership competencies in managers and administrators.
