Chapter 25: Epilogue: developing holistic leaders – beyond the obvious

Leadership is romanticized, individualized and worshipped as a universal solution to many a problem, as leaders are hero’ized (e.g. Meindl, Ehrlich & Dukerich, 1985) – and some romances just never end. Nevertheless, leadership development has been democratized over time and managers at all levels are constantly upgrading their skills and capabilities to lead teams, projects and organizations. We now also think of leadership in terms of co-producing learning, rather than absorbing content, and by learning, doing and ‘growing’ at the same time. In essence, learning and personal growth have been cornerstones of the new generations of leaders.
