Given the importance of work–life balance (WLB) not only to the overall well-being of employees, but also to the effective functioning of organizations, it is important to examine the role that organizations can play in helping employees balance their work and family responsibilities. We provide a framework that outlines the key components of WLB initiatives to help organizations develop and implement WLB initiatives. In this framework, we identify the antecedents of conflict and balance to help organizations understand the key components of WLB initiatives, as well as the channels by which they can foster WLB. The framework highlights a focus on the content of WLB initiatives and the focus of the initiative (in terms of the individual, the group, leaders, and the overall organization), the contextual aspects around WLB, as well as the general contextual aspects for implementing organizational initiatives, and process of developing and implementing WLB initiatives to increase their success. Finally, recommendations for developing, implementing and evaluating the initiatives are provided.
